Long pepper, also known as Piper longum, is a flowering vine cultivated for its fruit, which is used as a spice. The fruits of the Indonesian long pepper are often confused with chili peppers but are sweeter and less pungent than its close relative, Piper nigrum, which is the source of black, green, and white pepper. The fruits of the long pepper plant are long and conical, with a flavor similar to black pepper but more complex, sweeter, and with a citrusy bite similar to Szechuan peppercorns.
